On July 9, our team rescued 17-year-olds Chandu and Rupal from a brothel in Pune. A few days ago, our social worker visited them in their homes in Rajasthan.

Chandu lives in a small brick house. The tiny space was devoid of furniture. The family had minimal belongings: a mat, some clothes, and a few utensils. Each item had seen better days.
Chandu appeared healthy, but she seemed withdrawn and sullen. After Chandu's father passed away, her mother began working in a field to provide for the family. Our social worker encouraged Chandu's family to open a small business to help increase their earnings. Chandu's family said they were not interested in alternative options. Chandu said she wants to help her mother, then get married.

Our social worker advised Chandu to wait since she is a minor and under the legal marrying age. Instead, she encouraged her to focus on her studies and learning new skills. But Chandu expressed no interest in learning. The social worker left with a heavy heart as she proceeded to Rupal's house.

Rupal was not at home. While waiting for her to return, the social worker visited with Rupal's parents. Her father said Rupal was at the market; simultaneously, her mother said she was at the temple. Rupal arrived after 45 minutes. She seemed happy to see the social worker and gave her a hug.

Rupal told our social worker that she spends her days at home and does not go out. The social worker suspected that Rupal was being dishonest based on her conversation with her parents. She reminded Rupal that Chandu's and her legal cases are being presented in court.
The girls will soon be summoned by the
CWC (Child Welfare Committee) to share their testimonies. If they are not found at home, the CWC will issue a warrant for their parents because the girls are both minors. Rupal's parents grew visibly upset upon hearing this and promised to ensure that Rupal stays home. They said they would even accompany her when she is summoned by the CWC.

Our social worker was relieved to hear this and left, hopeful that Rupal's parents would keep Rupal safe and support her in this opportunity to testify and fight for justice.
