On June 10, social worker Shalini followed up with Koki (rescued on August 20, 2022, from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh). Koki was home with her grandmother and siblings. She stopped attending a local job after her family purchased three injection molding machines and started a small business of their own. They manufacture syringes. Each person takes turns to operate the machine and contribute to the family’s income.
Koki’s grandmother shared that they will visit their village in a few days to meet Koki’s aunt, who wants Koki to marry her son.
Koki is only 19 years old and still healing from the trauma she has endured. After listening to Koki's grandmother, Shalini assured Koki that she can say no if the marriage is against her will. Shalini also explained that marriage is a major decision that comes with many responsibilities. Koki listened quietly.
Shalini encouraged Koki to enroll in a vocational course of her interest. Koki did not respond, but we will keep encouraging her to increase her skills and education to maximize her future opportunities.
Shalini gifted Koki a bag of everyday items, including a blanket, a towel, a mosquito net, sandals, some clothes, and moisturizer. Koki happily received the gifts and thanked Shalini.
Our social workers will continue to check in with Koki and encourage her to make wise decisions.
