Shilu Returns to School!

On July 2, social workers Sheena and Mamta traveled to Gujarat to visit Shilu (rescued at 10 years old on February 24, 2022).
After her rescue, Shilu's parents were eager for her to return to their home. In February 2026, Shilu was released from the shelter home and went to live with her parents.
During our social workers' visit to Shilu's home in Gujarat, we learned that Shilu's family lives in very poor and unsafe conditions. If you have been following Shilu's journey, you will know that she was very eager to pursue an education from the day of her rescue.
Later in July, our social workers visited the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) and updated him about Shilu's circumstances. We shared about Shilu’s vulnerability and risk of being re-trafficked if she continued to live with her family, who can hardly provide for themselves, let alone Shilu.
The DCPO shared our concerns and assured us that he would investigate things further, as well as involve us in discussions and decisions regarding Shilu.
While waiting for a decision, our team continued to visit Shilu and her family. Shilu expressed increased interest in returning to school and even said she wanted to stay in a boarding school dormitory. After several visits and pleas, Shilu’s parents finally relented to allow her to return to school. She is now back on track and in 8th grade at a school in Gujarat.
We are so glad that Shilu's parents supported her desire to return to school and that Shilu can continue her education in a safe environment.
