A few days ago, our social worker, Reshma, and survivor-turned-volunteer, Sonali, visited Shalini (rescued from a brothel in Karad in February 2018) at her house in a suburb in Navi Mumbai. Shalini's husband works in a construction company and earns Rs 30,000 (~$350) a month. Shalini is a homemaker; she looks after her children and husband. Next month, Shalini will visit her in-laws in Uttar Pradesh while her husband continues to work in Navi Mumbai. We were delighted when she shared that she is eager to return to school and complete 10th grade.
Shalini hopes that her in-laws will support her decision and give her the green light to return to school. She also shared that she knows how to make jewelry—a skill she learned while she was in the shelter home. Some day, this skill will enable her to earn money and help to provide for her family, like so many other survivors.
