On May 13, social workers Rupeli and Bharti followed-up with Sanu (referred to us in 2023) at her grandparents' home. When they saw her, they immediately observed that she seemed emotionally and physically unstable. She was drowsy, her speech was slurred, and she struggled to respond to their questions.
Concerned, the social workers gently asked her what was going on. After some time, Sanu shared that she had developed deep feelings for her friend, Sakshi, and felt very emotionally attached to her. For Sanu, Sakshi had become her source of comfort, care, and affection. However, a few days ago, Sakshi suddenly stopped communicating with her. Unable to process the sudden disconnect and feelings of abandonment, Sanu was struggling to sleep at night so she had started taking pills to cope with her emotions. She also admitted that she had attempted to harm herself and was feeling suicidal. Sanu expressed how deeply she misses Sakshi and how difficult it is for her to imagine life without her.
A little background on Sanu’s life:
Sanu was primarily raised by her grandparents. During her adolescence, she was influenced by a bad group of friends who forced her into prostitution. In 2023, she was rescued and referred to our team for support and rehabilitation. After returning home, Sakshi was one of the few friends who consistently cared for and showed Sanu affection. Having grown up without emotional security, Sanu became deeply dependent on the relationship.
Our social workers spent time counselling Sanu, and are working to connect her with professional therapy and mental health support so that she can begin healing emotionally. Her grandparents were also counselled and encouraged to provide Sanu with care and emotional support during this vulnerable period. We will continue to walk alongside Sanu so that she does not feel alone in her struggle.
