Roshini's Struggles

social worker visit with survivor Roshini

On May 26, social worker Shelly and an intern conducted a follow-up visit with Roshini (rescued on December 8, 2009, from Pune, Maharashtra).

Roshini had left her husband and returned to her mother’s house. She shared that her husband was mentally and physically abusive and did not financially support the family. She also said that both her husband and in-laws repeatedly brought up her past, and their comments deeply hurt her. Additionally, they do not allow her to eat proper meals, often leaving her starving.

A frustrated Roshini decided to leave her husband’s house and return to her mother’s home with her younger child, while her older child chose to stay with the father.

Roshini’s mother also expressed her distress over her son-in-law’s behavior. She shared that their family had disclosed Roshini’s past before the marriage occurred. Despite knowing about the horrific abuse Roshini had already endured, her husband's family continued to mistreat her.

Roshini requested that Shelly speak with her in-laws to help them understand how she feels. If her in-laws are not receptive, Roshini plans to seek a divorce.

Meanwhile, Roshini shared that she has grown interested in another man and is considering marrying him in the future. Before making a decision, she wants to ensure that he is stable and capable of providing for the family.

To add to her struggles, Roshini is currently facing some serious health issues. She has gallstones as well as a tumor in her uterus.

These are the harsh realities many survivors continue to face even after their rescue. Our social workers will continue to visit Roshini to ensure she receives proper medical treatment and to support her through this difficult time.
