Mazina - Betrayed on her Birthday

Mazina was only 13 years old when her life took a sharp turn for the worst. On what should have been a day filled with joy and laughter, her 13th birthday turned into a nightmare. This is the story she shared with us after our team helped rescue her from a brothel in Ahmedabad.

One day, Mazina was home alone in Bangladesh when her cousin, Nusrat, visited her. She invited Mazina to go somewhere special for her birthday. Anticipating a day of fun and celebration, Mazina agreed. 

Nusrat took Mazina to her house, and introduced her to another woman, Haseena. The two women then took Mazina to a railway station. Mazina was confused and asked how long the trip would be. Haseena assured her it was a short trip and they would return soon. 

The train stopped at a station, and they went to Haseena’s house, where Mazina was introduced to Haseena’s husband, Nizam. Haseena told Mazina to go to sleep. She obeyed. When she woke up, Nizam, Haseena, and Nusrat made her walk through a jungle. It was dark, and Mazina remembers walking for most of the night. All talk of celebrating her birthday had ceased, and Mazina was uncertain of where she was or where her cousin and these two strangers were taking her. 

Soon, they crossed the Bangladesh border into India. They boarded another train in Kolkata. This next journey was longer as Mazina's train traveled 1000 miles to the western coast of India. 

When they arrived in Ahmedabad, Mazina was sold to a woman named Sultana for Rs 40,000 (~$470). Sultana told Mazina that she would be married to a 30-year-old man. She then forced Mazina to do all her housework. While Mazina was working in Sultana’s house, Sultana’s 30-year-old son assaulted her, repeatedly. He said his mother, Sultana, told him to do this.

Mazina was moved and sold multiple times. It was 23 months after Nusrat took her away from her home to “celebrate her birthday” that our team was finally able to help ensure her rescue.

On March 19, 2025, through our intel the AHTU (anti-human trafficking unit) police rescued Mazina from a brothel keeper’s house. The AHTU requested that we conduct Mazina's post-rescue procedures, so the police invited our team to meet her in Ahmedabad.

Finally, Mazina is safe, and she continues to heal in a shelter home.

During a recent visit with our social worker, Mazina eagerly showed us her schoolwork; we were thrilled to see her progress. Mazina is studying math, Hindi, and English. She enjoys drawing and creating things with her hands. Mazina continues to advance in her education and learn skills to help provide for her future.
