Suhu: "I'm Determined to Work Hard"

Suhu grew up in a slum in extreme poverty. She was an only child and lived with her parents and grandmother. Her humble beginnings allowed her to understand the importance of money and the value of helping others; even as a child she wanted to show kindness to others.

From an early age, Suhu excelled in school and enjoyed learning. But her life at home was distressing; her alcoholic father verbally and physically abused Suhu and her mother. Eventually, Suhu’s mother ran away with another man. Her father became increasingly abusive to Suhu. Her grandmother also verbally abused her. Suhu felt alone, traumatized, and depressed. She sought comfort in a group of friends who were a negative influence on her.

One day, when Suhu was in 12th grade, Suhu attended a friend’s birthday party. The friend took Suhu to a brothel where she forced her into prostitution. She threatened to alert Suhu’s father about it if she did not continue. Feeling like she had no other option, Suhu relented. Prostitution was an easy way to earn money for the basic needs her father did not provide for.

Fortunately, Freedom Firm found and rescued Suhu from a brothel in Kolkata in May 2023. She began to recover in the safety of a shelter home. She made new friends, and with the support of our social workers, Suhu started to learn new skills and she flourished in her studies. Within months of being rescued, Suhu completed 12th grade and her teacher said she did so well that she was promoted to accelerated learning.

Today, Suhu is pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work; she plans to pursue a master’s when she completes this. Suhu enjoys studying and actively participates in events at her School of Justice. She says she wants to be an independent woman who helps other girls like her feel supported to lead better lives.

"I am determined to work hard, grow, and help other girls like me build a better and more confident future." - Suhu

Sadly, Suhu is not on good terms with her family. Her father and grandmother continue to verbally abuse and harass her, and her father continues to drink excessively. Suhu finds the relationship mentally and emotionally exhausting. Our social workers continue to check in with her to support and encourage her, and in spite of this challenge, she bravely and determinedly pursues her dreams.
