Our investigators identified a minor girl in a red light area in Uttar Pradesh and on November 26th, we informed the police that she was being forced into prostitution. We continued to follow the minor’s location and the police helped us rescue 17 year old Gilli on December 2nd at 3:40PM.
The police also arrested three brothel keepers and collected evidence from the brothel.
Our team stayed with Gilli as the police took her and the brothel keepers to the police station.
The police wrote a First Information Report (FIR). However, the report contained a major error – Gilli was listed as a suspect instead of a victim! The shelter home would not provide Gilli with housing because the report identified her as a suspect. Our team advocated for the report to be corrected and eventually the police released a new report. The paperwork was ready around midnight, but at that time the shelter home was closed! Our team called the Child Welfare Committee and thankfully they arranged for Gilli to stay in a government home.
Gilli is safe and living in a shelter home today. She struggles at times but is adjusting. Read about her singing debut here!
